One thing is for sure when buying a smartphone: Your phone battery life needs to be able to go the extra mile for you, and that’s especially if you leave in a country with terrible power supply.
That’s probably the reason why I opted for a smartphone with a fat 4000mAH phone battery life (I’m a power user, what can I say?)
But perhaps, the reason why even these new phones with their fat batteries do not often still last as they are meant to is because of some of the more questionable activities we engage in that seem so harmless.
Take a look at this list and search yourself if you’re in fact guilty of any (or all) of these deeds that make your phone battery life span shorter:
#1. Charging your battery overnight.
Here’s the scenario: NEPA could bring the light over the night and so you leave your phone plugged in while you doze off.
It’s not that your battery is going to “over charge”. Technology in phone batteries these days have a special feature that simply deactivates the charger from the phone once it hits 100%.
Then what’s the problem? It boils down to charge cycles.
No battery however new is meant to last forever. At best, after a year you should notice a decline. Battery University reports that lithium-ion batteries have a charge cycle of 300-500 times before they finally become useless, meaning charging and discharging more frequently will quicken the demise of your smart phone battery life.
#2. Charging and using your phone at the same time.
So you want to chat, browse or play games or videos while your phone is charging, right?
While you might not notice the damage immediately, I’m sure the first thing you notice is that your phone slowly starts becoming hotter. Have you ever wondered why you see some batteries swollen up? Now you know why.
Also, every battery has a designated charge time. A 2000mAH battery ought to hit 100% in about 1 hour. If you charge and use your phone at the same time, obviously it means you’ll make it charge slower. The result is that you’ll be stressing the battery causing it to overheat.
#3. Using any charger that comes your way.
I’m sure you’ve realised by now that all those N200 chargers you buy for your phones charge your phones really, really annoyingly slowly. But that’s not even the kicker.
There’s a reason they tell you in the manual to use only manufacturer specified chargers for your phones. This is because the company that made the phone made the charger FOR that particular phone.
Using another charger (that wasn’t built with your phone’s battery in mind) usually either doesn’t supply your phone adequate power and so it charges slower, or over supplies power and puts your phone in harms way (worse case scenario, your phone could blow up. Long-term scenario: slow and steady decline of your Smart phone battery life).
My follow-come Infinix hot 4 charger gives me about 50% in 45 mins and I know how much I do to protect it from harm.
#4. When you don’t charge your battery for a long time.
Here’s the dilemma: You shouldn’t leave your battery uncharged for a long time at 0% or 100%. According to Techadvisor, you ought to leave it at about 40-50%.
If you leave it at 100%, Lithium-ion batteries tend to discharge at about 5-10% per month. If you leave it at 0%, there’s a big possibility that whenever you get back to it, it may no longer be able to hold power.
Think about it, that’s why when you buy a new battery, the factory charge percentage is usually around 40-60 percent awaiting your full charge upon usage.
#5. Now the most unreasonable: charging your phone from zero to 100.
First time I read this part during my research, I totally disagreed with it out of pure vexation. But if your country has 24hrs electricity 7 times a week, you have precisely no clue what I’m talking about here.
Battery University reports again that Li-ion batteries (the ones usually in our phones) do not need full charging (nor is it safe to do it). This is because high voltage stresses the battery and wears it out in the long run.
They say all you need is to top it up a little more each time it hits 50% and your battery will thank you.
